Vanessa Slotterback, MA ATR
Pre-Licensed Professional Counselor
I am a registered art therapist working as a pre-licensed counselor and continuing to gather clinical hours toward licensure. I currently work part time while pursuing my PhD in psychology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where I am particularly interested in exploring how neuroscience can deepen our understanding of the healing processes involved in art interventions. Since 2019, I have supported clients in a variety of settings, including nursing homes, hospitals, and outpatient clinics. My work is grounded in a client-centered approach with an emphasis on trust, collaboration, and growth toward healing.
I earned my bachelor's degree in psychology and criminal justice from Bloomsburg University in 2016 and completed my master's degree in art therapy and counseling at Seton Hill University in 2020. I have experience working with individuals across the lifespan and am especially passionate about supporting adults, older adults, and people navigating life transitions.
However, I am happy to work with individuals aged seven and up too. I have worked with clients facing a range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, stress, grief, PTSD, bipolar symptoms, schizophrenia, memory difficulties, and experiences of intimate partner violence.
I believe deeply in the healing potential of the arts. In my own creative work, I often depict art as a candle or flashlight, something that brings light into murkier moments. Artistic expression can take many forms, including coloring, poetry, and painting, and I tailor materials and guidance to each client's needs. No artistic skill or experience is required to participate in the process.
My therapeutic style is empathetic, open, and collaborative. I work alongside clients to support their goals, and I can be direct when it is helpful. I strive to create a space that feels safe, supportive, and empowering, where clients can explore their experiences at their own pace. I am committed to cultural competence and strongly support LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities. Outside of work, I love reading, staying active, making art, and spending quality time with friends and family!
