Vanessa Slotterback, M.A. ATR
Pre-Licensed Professional Counselor
Hello, I’m Vanessa! I have over 3 years of experience in the mental health field and am currently working towards my LPC licensure and board-certified art therapy credentials. In 2016, I earned my bachelor’s in psychology from Bloomsburg University, and in 2020, I graduated with my master’s in art therapy with a specialization in counseling from Seton Hill University.
Art, in and of itself, can be healing, and I enjoy incorporating it into the sessions! I work with a wide range of art materials including colored pencils, crayons, markers, gel pens, charcoal, watercolor paints/acrylic paints, oil pastels, chalk pastels, tissue paper, model magic. I have experience working with anxiety, depression, grief, intimate partner violence, PTSD, substance use, bipolar symptoms, schizophrenia, and memory difficulties at hospitals and outpatient agencies.
My approach is client centered while also incorporating CBT strategies, existential therapy, and trauma informed approaches. When words elude us, art has the power to encompass an experience holistically. Art can be used in the sessions to enhance awareness, expression, processing, problem solving, well-being, and mindfulness. It enables a person to tap into their senses, observe the progression of a piece, and witness the emotions and thoughts which arise from the image.
The art I’m most passionate about right now is using mixed medias to scrapbook. In my spare time, I love reading and listening to podcasts regarding the brain, counseling, and human behavior. I also value spending quality time with friends, and my lovely partner!
